Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard in Massive $68.7 Billion All-Cash M&A Deal

Microsoft has announced they will acquire Activision Blizzard in an all-cash deal valued at $68.7 Billion. Alex discusses Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s comments that this acquisition “will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms” and explains why he doesn’t see synergies here that enable Microsoft to capture metaverse market share despite his overall positivity on the deal. If Microsoft really wanted to go for the metaverse, why not just buy Roblox, which would’ve been cheaper than Activision Blizzard was even with the 45% premium Microsoft paid.

Alex goes on to discuss the opportunistic nature of this deal with Activision CEO Bobby Kotick on the way out amid reported pervasive toxic culture within the company and Microsoft having a ready team with Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer at the helm.
