Do Platform Conglomerates Build or Buy Additional Platforms? – Tech M&A Analysis

Nick Johnson, Co-author of Modern Monopolies, joins Alex to discuss the M&A landscape for tech giants with a focus on acquisitions that are platform businesses or accretive to platforms already being operated by the acquirer. Additionally, Johnson points out that while M&A is the dominate method we see big tech using to achieve platform conglomerate status, examples like Amazon’s B2B marketplace, Amazon Business, showcase that tech giants can still spin out viable tech businesses using a build-from-scratch approach.
