Why Are We Talking About Platforms?

At Applico, we believe that platforms are the key business model for success in the Connected Revolution.

While platforms have existed for a long time, today’s platform businesses are far more powerful, flexible and open than their predecessors. And the widespread availability of connected technology and processing power means that its far easier for platforms to attract users and scale.

As a result, platforms give businesses the most opportunity for value creation and differentiation using today’s technology.

One example is the very competitive mobile messaging industry. The CEO of Kik, one of the most popular messaging apps in the U.S., recently talked about how they plan to differentiate themselves from their competitors. His answer? Build a platform.

Judging by the recent moves made by other companies in that industry, Kik’s competition has similar ideas. In messaging, like in many highly competitive markets, platforms win.

So any business interested in growing or in having a big impact in today’s market should be thinking about building their own platform.
