Why Airbnb is Leaving China 🏨 πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³

Airbnb, a platform for booking vacation rental homes, has announced the company will cease its operations in China. As of July 30th, all experience and home listing will become inactive. Airbnb cited China’s strict public health policy as reason for shuttering but I think there’s more going on here as we’ve seen multiple Western internet platforms leave the country.

We’ve often talked about how China fostered a tech industry via protectionism that benefited its domestic startups. I think China’s move to promote home grown innovation through tech protectionism is frankly, brilliant. With such aggressive policy and hostility towards outside foreign tech entrants, I think it’s senseless for everyone from startups to large enterprises to keep trying to enter the Chinese market.
