Do You Have to be a Tech Company to Build a Platform?

You don’t have to be a tech company to build a platform.

While most of today’s successful platforms have been built by so-called tech companies, many pioneering traditional businesses are building platforms as well. Examples include Nike with Nike+ and GE with its Predix platform for the Internet of Things, as well as companies like GM, Ford and Tesla that are building platforms for the connected car.

These businesses are not tech companies, but they have all embraced technology and used it to build innovative platforms. Any business that wants to compete in the Connected Revolution should be thinking about how they can do the same.

This doesn’t mean that you have to change the core identity of your business, but it does mean you should be willing to adapt your process and learn from how other leading companies have leveraged technology to position themselves for long-term success.
