eBay Fudged $40B in GMV Sales Numbers on Earnings Reports 😬

eBay has announced they will be changing how the company defines Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) to align better with customer money flows on its platforms. Alex explains why GMV is an important metric in marketplace business models and while eBay claims these changes make an immaterial impact on previously reported numbers, he disagrees that the $40 billion differential is insignificant. Previously, eBay had been recording GMV regardless of whether the buyer and seller actually consummated the transaction.
